February 16, 2012 Thursday 8:30PM No Fee Scientific Meeting:
Trauma, Disruption, Internalization, and Reintegration: A Self-Psychological Approach
In this presentation Marc Wayne will illustrate how emotional trauma in the infant/caregiver dyad disrupts development of the self and impairs the child's capacity to pursue healthy object relations.
Traumatic experiences damage one's capacity to pursue adaptive patterns in diverse psycho-biological systems. Trauma impairs one's competence in establishing normal intimate relationships and compromises one's capacity to regulate affect in states of over-arousal. Recent findings in the fields of Attachment and Infant Research, Developmental Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy Research have demonstrated the importance of psycho-biological attunement, affect synchrony and interactive repair within the primary caretaker/infant dyad. Failure in these interdependent systems results in experiences of acute stress and distress ultimately registering as pathogenic trauma.
Traumatic and dissociative states can result from this loss of the existential continuity in the dyad due to mal-attunement on the part of the caregivers. These early experiences have profound implications with regard to pathological emotional functioning in the future. Within this presentation, Marc will demonstrate how the therapist's interventions can begin to repair traumatic ruptures and create new pathways of development as a result of the positive therapeutic dyad. Case material and excerpts from relevant films will highlight these concepts.
